Need suggestions on long lasting (over a year) back pain?
About a year ago I hurt my back while we were moving to another house. I can't pinpoint exactly what caused the pain, but the next day I had a relatively sharp pain below my shoulder blade on my right side. After a few months it became less and less painful to the point where I could basically ignore it, but now it seems to be flaring up again.
The odd thing is that it only hurts if I move a certain way, usually when I am leaning up from my bed or couch. When I am up and walking around or sitting down, there is no pain at all.
I can't tell if this is a muscle or nerve issue, so hopefully someone here can give me an idea what the problem is.
I'm kinda doubting that it's a disc, as the pain is situated more on my side than towards the spine, but then again I'm no doctor.
I haven't noticed a change in pain with the weather either.

It sounds like a pinched nerve to me, I think a cortisone shot can fix that, but I think your best bet is to just go to a chiropractor and have him take a look at you, he would know whats best. Good luck hope everything turns out ok

Hey!! I have the same type problem on the right side of my lower back and it does the same thing and gets flared up if I move wrong or aggravate it and then I am unable to lift my right leg out in front of me or pick it up to put on my jeans. It is a very sharp pain and there is no way to stop the pain it just slowly goes away in time. I think its a pinched nerve and other than getting an epidural I haven't found anything that works. I would be too scared for surgery especially on my back so I just try to be very careful which way I turn or move and if it does flare only time helps me. This has been going on with me now for over 9 years.

Sounds more like a disc and it could be impinging (pushing) on a nerve. Does it change with weather patterns? I have arthritis in my spine and am better at forseeing weather changes than weather people (not that that is to hard anyway). If a low pressure is coming it hurts to turn or bend my head/neck and shoulders. Goes away when pressure system goes. Try doing stretching exercises in the AM and after any kind of exertion. I love my TENS units (you can buy these without a RX if you need to), alternate heat and ice while relaxing, Also keep a check on your posture. See your doctor to know for sure.

There are several things you can do to alleviate back pain. Some already mentioned like Advil, accupuncture. I'd like to add
1. Yoga,
2. Rolfing or a regular massage,
3. Change mattress if it is old
4. Beware of your posture and pressure points
5. Try to self diagnose with the help of on-line "medical exam". Your pain may eminate from something totally different like kidney stones or some sort of trauma..

Hi I've heard that Acupuncture could help, also I've seen this item on HSN ( Home Shopping Network ) that is a inverted exercises machine, that is supposed to help alleviate pain in your back. It has been used as therapy to take the pain off the disc. Check on the HSN website, under exercise machine etc., and you will find it. Then check on google to see the reviews for this product. Hope this helps?

Try 2 Advils every 4 hours. It always worked for me.
