    should be red, as in bright red, because it's richly oxygenated. If I remember correctly it'll become darker as oxygen is depleted

    All blood is red. If blood is taken from an artery, it is a brighter red due to the higher amount of oxygen in the arteries. Venous (from a vein) is a darker red.

    Oxygenated blood (oxyhemoglobin) may be described as scarlet or vermilion (i.e. bright red).

    Deoxygenated blood (hemoglobin) returning to the heart is usually referred to as crimson (i.e. dark red).
