Is it logical when a christian says to an atheist, "can you prove that God does not exist?"?

Can a christian prove that Zeus does not exist?

Update:

So if neither side can prove anything why would people choose to believe in something like religion?

Is it simply because they WANT

Update 2:

Update 3:

... simply becaue they WANT a God to exist?

It is a little difficult to "prove" the existence of "nothing." So, no, from an atheist's point of view, it is not a logic question.

Which is probably why they question a Christian's sanity when they raise that kind of question.

Exactly. It is the religious trick to place the burden of prove at the atheists side. That is extremely silly, since the atheist never made the claim that something existed. That's what the religious person did. So let them prove that god or zeus, or the tooth fairy exists and then the atheist can come up with alternate proof.

In general, such a question is not logical because whether God does or does not exist is really beyond us to "prove" so. However, to ask such a question is logical, as it is something that most humans strive and struggle to answer. It's human nature to ask such questions because we are curious and it's something that I think everyone would like to know, at least with complete, sound proof. Asking questions, especially to those who have opposing views is beneficial because it can offer ideas from a different perspective. I think refusing to ask or to answer such questions is ignorant and naive because we can only stand to grow in understanding.

People choose to believe in a religion just as people choose not to believe in a religion. That belief develops from what we learn and experience and how we react.

In the law when you bring a claim to court then you have to prove it up.

If the atheist is telling a Christian that God does not exist then its perfectly reasonable for the Christian to counter with, well prove it, since they are making the initial assertion.

If the Christian is making the claim to the atheist that God does exist then the burden of proof lies on them.

I look at this issue from a legal perspective. I think the burden of proof lies on the party that is making the assertion or claim to the other person.'

If neither side cares if the other side accepts their claim then neither side should have to prove it to the other.

    edit

I said that neither side could prove it to the other. I never said that I dont believe that you cant get personal revelation of truth from God, but you cant prove to another person that you got that personal proof.

If I witnessed someone getting murdered but there was no physical evidence for me to prove that the murderer did it then I cant prove the person a murderer. That doesnt mean that the person didnt kill the other person and that I didnt see what happened for myself.

In simple terms academia states that in the absence of proof of the existence of something it must be deemed not to exist until verifiable proof is found - thus god is held not to exist pending some sort of verifiable evidence.

There is not one single mention of Jesus in the entire Roman record - that is right - not one!!! At the same time as he was supposed to have been around there were a number of Jews claiming to be the messiah - all of whom are well recorded!!

He was supposed to have been a huge problem to the Romans and produced wonderful miracles but still not one contemporary record?

Even the bible mentions of him like all other references were not written until many years after his supposed death!!

At best he was an amalgam of those others!!

Pilot is recorded in the Roman record as a somewhat lack luster man but no mention of a Jesus, a trial or crucifixion that would surely have been used to make him look brighter!!

Lets face it the reason they try to turn the onus of proof on atheists is because there is not one single shred of proof that god exists and that anyone who found one would become a multimillionaire overnights so there is no lack of people who would like to!!!

In an indirect way, it's saying that both sides have only beliefs and therefore they are equal and neither one can be proved.

No not logical, but people who have faith need to believe in something because they can not deal with LIFE without a crutch.

I've never asked that, but if other Christians want to, so be it. Btw He has shown Himself......Jesus. Just because you weren't there doesn't mean it didn't happen.
