How would I replace an oilpan on a F-250 and how long would it take?

My father-in-law owns an F-250 I think it's a 351c (i think), he took it to firestone to get an estimate to replace the oil pan and gasket and it was 800 dollars. I understand how to take bolts out and put a gasket in place properly but, I have never been underneath the 250 to see if there are obstructions that would make the job difficult. I guess what I am realy asking is if this I can handle this with out major rip and tear work, I am fine with pulling a crossmember or unbolting motor mounts but, I don't want to mess with anything more than that

I am not a grease monkey but I am good with tools (electrician by trade).

I also understand labor costs but 800 sounds alittle pricey (he does love firestone)

You need to go to as library and get a repair book out and read how to do the job. $800 sounds like it isn't a straightforward job, either that or the Firestone people are trying to rip him off. Normally you just remove the covers underneath, undo the screws holding the pan in position, replace the gasket, and rescrew the pan.

The year and if the truck is a 4x4 would help out. Both of those affect the price. 4x4 is alot more work. Depending on the year, some are easier than others (less hours for the job). I did a 1996 F250 5.8 today in my shop. You have to pull the upper intake and throttle body on the engine (need the room to raise the engine under cowl), remove fan shroud, disconnect transmission cooler lines (very important, I screwed that up once), unbolt the motor mounts raise the engine up and support (you can put wooden blocks between the mounts and pedestals, remove the starter, unbolt pan, now its kinda tricky because you cant see good but you unbolt the oil pump and drop it into the pan. Now you can remove the oil pan. It seems like there's not enough room but you will wiggle it out of there. Putting the oil pump drive back in blind can be a pain though when you reinstall and you don't have much room there to work. The book time was 5.9 hours. The pan was $140.00 and the gasket was 35.00. Get the one piece Fel Pro gasket. Otherwise you will be fighting it the whole time and end up with leaks. Its worth the extra money for the Fel Pro trust me. Now you see where the $800 is justified. I have customers question the price all the time because theydon't realize the work involved. Although I did the job for $700.

I even have seen Powerstrokes with over a million miles on them. maintenance is the considerable. i individually have 2 97s, a 350 dually with 154000 miles and a 250 we've been given at 137k and now has 210k, without considerable maintenance, 2 alternators and a water pump. The vehicles have had some brakes jobs and tires, and the recurring oil alterations etc.
