First, let me say that I do not know the details of what is going on with Mr. Geithner. What I do know is that once received a letter from the IRS telling me that I had made an error in paying my taxes SEVERAL YEARS AGO and owed them some additional money. I am an honest person and if this could happen to me then it could happen to other honest people too. I have no opinion one way or the other on Mr. Geithner specifically, but it is possible that he made an honest mistake.

You can still pay them. However, you will have to pay some stiff penalties in addition to the taxes.
But if you refuse to pay them, and the IRS finds out that you didn't pay, then you'll go to jail for a while.

Geithner paid the back taxes AND interest. And he apologized. That is why he is not in jail.

Geithner claims ignorance of the law, which in the eyes of the law, is fraud.
Sorry dude, unless you're on Obama's main team, you lose and they win....for now.
