Why was Grover Cleveland US President twice?

He was our 22nd and 24th President. Is this still allowed? That a former President can run again?

Update:

I think it would take a lot of courage to run for Presdiency again as it's gotta be the most toughest job in the world! It ages them quickly! :P

Grover Cleveland is the only U.S. president ever to serve two non-consecutive terms. Cleveland was a Democrat who had gained a reputation for efficiency and clean government during terms as mayor of Buffalo and then governor of New York. He was elected president in 1884, succeeding Chester A. Arthur. Cleveland served one term but then was unseated by Republican Benjamin Harrison in the elections of 1888. Cleveland returned the favor in 1892 by unseating Harrison and returning to office for another four-year term.

Cleveland's presidencies were marked by his fight against corruption in the federal government and by his efforts to solve national financial problems. Cleveland had scarcely taken his oath of office when the worst financial panic in years broke across the country. A complex phenomenon, the Panic of 1892-1893 had its roots in over expansion of United States industry, particularly railroad interests; in the long-term agricultural depression that reached back to the 1880s; and in the withdrawal of European capital from America as a result of hard times overseas. As the panic broadened into depression, the American public tended to focus debate about its cause and cure on one item: the money question.-

    Grover Cleveland Term

Good answers to why and how he was President twice. But no response to why he is considered our 22nd and 24th President.

In my opinion it is because some Historians don't know how counting works. It is certainly correct to say he was the 22nd President and then was President again, but one person cannot be two different Presidents. Being elected twice should make no difference whether sequential or not.

The oath of office has been taken by 43 different people. Any other answer is factually incorrect.

We have had 43 people serve as President of the United States. Any other answer is factually incorrect.

President Obama is by my math the 43rd President of the United States.

Grover Cleveland was the 22nd President, and then was President again. He was not two Presidents.

Here is an example of their way of counting. Let's say hypothetically Bill has been fixated on two girls and keep getting in and out of relationships with them. First he dates Suzy, then he dates Kimmy, then he went back to Suzy, then back to Kimmy, then dated Suzy again and now his is am back with Kimmy. By the 'Presidential' count, Kimmy would be the sixth girl he dated. If someone asked me how many women he dated, the answer be six. That is stupid, he has only dated two women.

So there are two things at work here.

Cleveland was born before a term limit was created. So he could have served as many terms as he wanted.

Presidents elected after the two-term limit was established CAN run again if they have only served one term. So if Obama does not run for election in 2012, but wants to try again in 2016 and wins, he could serve a second term at that time.

No president has tried to run for a non-consecutive third term after serving two successively. So if George W. Bush, who served two consecutive terms already, wanted to run again in 2016, the Supreme Court would have to examine the Constitution and make a decision.

Back then there were no term limits on a president, today the president can serve two terms. If a president like Bush Sr, a one termer, wanted to run again he could. Thankfully, Bush Jr, a two termer, cannot.

The two term limit was not law until after FDR. Before then, presidents bowed to tradition and only stayed in two terms. After FDR, Congress amended the constitution with the two term limit.

It is still allowed. If Carter of George HW Bush wanted to run again, they could. Not that either would be re-elected, but, as they only served one term each, they are eligible.
