Have you ever had a Patty Melt ANYWHERE that wasn't DRIPPING with grease ?
Just had lunch - the special at the restaurant/bar (small rural town) was a patty melt .... TOTALLY dripping with grease... the bread, the meat, the cheese, the onions.... all just soggy and saturated with it.
I've never had a Patty melt ANYWHERE (small places, fast food joint, sit-down place like Applebee's etc) where the Patty Melt wasn't just two pieces of bread, a hamburger patty, and 4 cups of used french fry grease.
Am I missing something ? When I make one at home the bread is toasted and crispy, the patty is browned (not just gray), the onions are lightly sauteed so they still taste like onions and not burnt grass clippings, the cheese is just melted.... and there isn't an 1/8th inch deep puddle of grease on the plate when I'm done eating.

They don't exist, homemade is always better, it is much easier and faster for them to just slap something together than to expend the time and effort necessary to provide people with quality food. It's the sad truth.

Hmmm. I had a patty melt at a local diner (East Tennessee) recently and it wasn't greasy at all. Juicy but definitely not greasy.
