What are the best organisations to do a TESOL or TEFL course through?
I know there are lots on the internet and I have looked at them all a great deal, but I can't help wondering which sites are telling me the truth or lying about how great they are, their international recognition, or their ability to find me work overseas. Anyone been there done that, that can describe their experience and recommended an institute?

Take a look at http://www.teflcoursereview.com/ which has reviews from people who took the course. It seems to be quite genuine.

There are lots of TEFL certificates out there, and a lot of them are scams. In your case, I'd check into a local college and find out if they do a TEFL certification. Good ones usually take about a year if you already have a BA. (Doesn't really matter in what.) The lady you mentioned may have had an RSA or Trinity diploma (They're British, but there are good American ones too.) To do those you need a teaching credential before you can sign up, but that's not always the case. A good course will cost about as much as the number of college hours it takes. Mine was about $6000, but it was worth it since I always got jobs. There is a difference between TEFL and TESOL, but it's pretty subtle. One is teaching as a foreign language, and the other is teaching as a second language.

I would go for a course associated with an established institution like the University of Toronto TEFL Online Course. http://teflonline.teachaway.com/
