Given there are some 2 to 50 million species of animals… How long did it take Adam to name them all?

And how long into the process did it take for Adam to start thinking god was a huge douche-bag for making him sit there and come up with 10 million some odd names?

Update:

Beetle...

Beetle....

Beetle....

Beetle...

Beetle...

Yea...that another friggen "beetle"!

Wow! 50 million give or take 48 million. You show remarkable brilliance.

Given that Adam was in the garden at the time, he was likely bored out of his skull and therefore had more time on his hands than you did when you came up with this question.

    <shrugs> Who really cares?

As far as that goes, we aren't told that he named all the _varieties_ of each animal (and plant), which is what you are really addressing. But, you are right; a beetle is a beetle is a beetle . . .

It would have taken him a substantial amount of time -- certainly more than 24 hours. This is important as it presents compelling evidence that the creative days mentioned in Genesis chapter 1 are not literal 24 hour days. How so? Well according to Genesis 1:23-31, land animals and the first man and woman were all created during the same creative day. But Genesis 2:19-20 by speaking of Adam naming all the animals and him not finding a help meet, gives reasonable indication that more than 24 hours elapsed from Adam's creation until the creation of Eve. Note, too, that even Adam's choice of words upon finally meeting Eve -- ". . . AT LAST bone of my bones . . ." -- indicates that he was indeed waiting for more than just 24 hours. So Genesis 2 gives evidence that the creative days mentioned in chapter 1 are longer than 24 hours.

  • I am really glad to see that you have turned a corner and are studying the Holy and Inerrant Word of God now! This is a very good step.

We are not told how long it took Adam to name the Animals only that He did .

With his intelect I am sure it did not take long however! After all He was Made perfect and wasonly imperfect after sin was brought into the world.

Before the fall, Adam could not die.

Let's say he had to name 50,000,000 species at 1 per minute eight hours a day. That would take nearly 300 years. That's supposing he had to name them all.

The Bible says he had to name "the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field." He didn't name the fish and all the insects. There were far less than 50,000,000 species to name.

Time did not have the same impact on Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Adam had literally all the time in the world. Most likely, he was as a young child fascinated by everything he saw.

Adam lived for over 900 years, so I think he'd have quite a bit of time on his hands.

Plus, there wouldn't be as many species then as there are today, due to microevolution.

Oh, and if you're gonna say "I thought christians don't believe in evolution" then you're terribly outdated. I don't know a single christian (or consequently, anyone) who doesn't believe in microevolution.

Now macroevolution... thats a different matter. ;)

Im guessing it took him OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAAAAAAAAND hours to complete it.

Your question just proves how accurate the Bible is.

Let's say he worked 10 hours a day, and I think it's a fair guess that somebody could name 15 animals in one work hour.

    50 million divided by (15 animals* 10 hours * 365 days) = 900 years.

    Adam lived 900 years.

Since he lived over 800 years and was undoubtedly allowed to delegate some of his duties such as this, he probably had more than enough time.

Adam is still naming the animals, we find new species everyday and name them. I am from Adam and so Adam is still naming the animals.

I think that he did a little better after he ate the fruit of the tree of Knowledge, but he got kicked out before he could finish.
