Someone please answer my STATISTICS question?? 10 points!?

Consider a sample of 3 observations, with a standard deviation of s =1. If the first 2 observations

are 100 and 101, what is the value of the third observation?

    Let the mean be m and the third result x.

    By definition of the mean (100 + 101 + x)/3 = m

    By definition of variance (100^2 + 101^2 + x^2]/3 - m^2 = 1

    Solve those simultaneous equations. There are two possible answers which are NOT whole numbers. One is a little over 98.5 and the other is a little under 102.5

    P.S. Work out the standard deviation of 99, 100, 101 and it comes to 0.82 (2 dec. pl.)

    99 as the std deviation is +- 1.
