Why are fossil fuels still used?

What are some reasons that our society still uses fossil fuels? Why have we not switched to more efficient methods of powering our appliances/vehicles/creating energy.

Thanks :)

Because we have all of this technology in place and experience in working with fossil fuels. Switching over to other fuel forms, such as ethanol, solar, wind, whatever, takes money and there's this really high initial expense. That expense doesn't exist with fossil fuels.

Because the infrastructures that support them are so great if we just did away with fossil fuels all at once it would collapse the whole worlds economy. It is a transition that cannot take place over a short period of time. We as a nation are beginging to understand the problem and have now begun to start the transition to more renewable resources. that transition is likely to take around 2-3 decades in my reasoning. so dont expect fossil fuels to be replaced anytime soon.
