Could someone give me some info on New York please.....?

My husband and I would like to have a 5 day break there (we are from UK). We have never been to America before so I don't know anything about the city. Firstly, I've been looking for hotels forever - but I can't seem to find one, they seem very very expensive, but I am looking for a very nice central hotel so understand that will cost more. I'm a bit fussy when it comes to hotels. Also, what is the best area to stay in? When I look up hotels on the numerous sites, it asks which area we want to stay in and gives options such as - Brooklyn, Midtown East, Midtown West, Upper East side, Upper west side, etc. We would want to be central to all the sites, although I do understand that it's a huge city and we may not be central to everything. Also, is the city expensive for food, drinks, sight seeing etc, or does it just depend where you want to go? I would be most grateful for any information you can give me. Many thanks.

Hello~ if you want to be in the heart of the city I recommend Midtown East or Murray Hill. I would avoid the upper and lower areas or anywhere outside of manhattan.. Yes the city can be expensive of food drinks etc but with the right amount of information you can find yourself some inexpensive things.

General information: $2.00 1 way on the subway or MTA bus (7.00$ for 1 day unlimited card, they have other unlimited cards can't remember)

    cheap tips:

You can see the statue of liberty for almost free if you take the ferry(the ferry is free) to staten island. If you want more info on that let me know on here I'll be happy to give you directions.

Free ice skating during cold season at bryant park(just gotta have your own skates or pay for the skates), apposed to ice skating at Rockefeller.

BAMN Automat, East Village, St. Marks Pl, a fun food vending machine place. http://whyloveny.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/... pretty inexpensive food.

Oh Taisho! Yakitori has good eats and it's not too expensive too. It's right on St. Marks Pl.

Don't go to the overly hyped restaurants you see on TV. Honestly I can guarantee you will be disappointed! I would avoid restaurants in Times Square as well the food is so so and it's so expensive.

I would stick to shopping at Chinatown, tons of inexpensive stuff there and the quality isn't half bad. St. Marks Pl can be fun if you're looking for cheap knock off glasses, sunglasses, jewelry, piercings, etc etc.

Museums I would visit, Metropolitan Museum of Art and American Museum of Natural History you can get in by "donations" basically meaning you could get in for a penny! I usually leave 5$ though lol

As for transportation, if you feel confident using a map I recommend avoiding taxis esp during heavy traffic, you'll waste a ton of money! I'd say the only time I ever used a taxi was during late nights like at 3AM.

Useful websites: www.yelp.com for reviews, http://www.onnyturf.com/subway/ EXCELLENT subway/NYC map!, http://www.ny.com/transportation/taxis/ informative info on taxis

Again, if you want directions feel free to ask I'll be happy to supply them :)

You really need to figure out what sites you want to see. Mannh is a fairly small island east to west, and we do have a very good subway system so you can easily get around. West side has the broadway theaters and some of the museums, while east side has one of the other great museums. East, west, midtown - can walk between all, or take subway. I don't like bus, but that's an option too. The stock exchange, bklyn bridge, and the World trade site (its just a hole w construction) but trinity church next door are all downtown (easy subway). To save, skip the central hotel and try to find something near but not in midtown. We do have really expensive midtown hotels. Food is more expensive than some cities, but you don't need to eat at 5 start rest all the time. We have at last count 18,000 restaurants. Lots of pretty good pubs etc. Would suggest a guidebook. If thinking of broadway shows and can be flexible and willing to gamble a bit, there are places that sell broadway tickets day of performance, way cheaper. I work in mannh and take lots of friends on tour. facts - Washington square park was a cemetery, this park also has a large elm - it was used for hangings until 1824. Wall street - named because the pigs and garbage were on the south side of the wall - fitting since that's where the money people are now.

Iv'e been to New York twice, it's great you will love it you want to stop anywhere in Manhatten. It does not realy matter where abouts you stay as the subway system is regular cheap clean and safe.

    Here are some top tips

1.Take the Staten island ferry ,It's free, yes free and it goes right past the Statue of Liberty .

    2. Go to Century 21 it's a department store near Ground zero,Designer gear and fantastic prices ,there are some times street hawkers outside selling copies for the same price as you can get the real thing inside .

3.Go to the Natural History Museum ,They give you a sugested entry price and then you pay what you want to pay ($1 each is OK)

4.Use the subway $2 per journey each if you miss your stop you can get on another train and go back with out paying any extra, the map seems complicated at first but it's not that bad.

5.Don't buy your suvenirs from the actual places get them from the shops in Little China or from the Hells Kitchen area where they are more reasonably priced.

6 If you are going to see a Broadway show ,go to the ticket booth under the Marriot on Times square when it opens (sorry slighly vaigue see number 9) for 50% discount tickets ( these are proper tickets for decent seats ) I got front row for half the price of those at the back.

7.Go to Joe's dinner in Brooklyn for a good meal and fantastic cheesecake.

8.On the subject of food ,eat where the locals eat .A good breakfast will set you up for the day so you don't have to stop half way through the day to find food.

    9. Grayline buses run a great sevice you can choose from 48 hours all loops witch means you can hop on and off any where on there circuit for 48 hours ijncluding the nighttime tour or you can go for the three day all inclusive tour which we thought would have been a bit to much .There operatives gave us some realy good local hint and tips

The biggest expense of a visit to NYC is the hotel accommodation. But, although the cheapest hotels are expensive, better hotels are only a little more expensive. You probably want to stay midtown so you can travel to the sights during daylight hours and stay in you own neighbourhood at night.

Just accept that NYC is going to be expensive. Take it on the jaw, don't penny-pinch and enjoy the world-class city.

if you want to be in a central location, stick to midtown manhattan, either east or west. that will give you the best access to public transportation, you will easily be able to catch a subway that can take you to other parts of the city.

for the best hotel deals, i suggest you try priceline.com and you may be able to get discounts on some of the attractions too.

to find your way walking through most of manhattan, 5th Avenue separates the east side from the west side, with the address numbers being lowest closest to 5th Ave.

the city is expensive, but you should be able to find some bargains.

    enjoy your visit.

I lived in the NYC area most of my life but not lately. I can't recommend a specific hotel but it sounds like you want ot be in Midtown. EVERYTHING is expensive there. If you stick to things like Rockefeller center there are some things you can see cheap. I always recommend the tour at NBC because it is very interesting. There is a doubledecker bus service that tours midtown. You will find that food And drinks are quite expensive.

Hi,My husband & I went to N.Y. in December. We stayed at The Carlton on Madison Avenue. We found this very central and a good base for sight seeing.A couple of blocks from Empire State building and a block to the Flatiron building. This was classed as Midtown.

    Try www.tripadvisor.com

As its your first trip I would suggest an organised tour,we went with this Co. www.newyorkpartyshuttle.com Its a great tour, cost around $60 plus driver/guide tips.you see all the major sights, its not a hop on hop off type trip. The tour guide stays with you and is very informative, there were around 25 people on our trip,I think it was around 5hrs,we stopped for lunch at the South Street Sea Port.We did the tour on our first day and went back to places we wanted to see again over the following days. The subway is easy to use and a $7 ticket gives you 4 rides,so getting around is simple. There are plenty of taxi's but the subway is quicker.

You travel under visa waiver but there is a mandatory ESTA form you now have to have before you can travel to the U.S. It doesnt cost anything but you have to have one or the authorities wont let you board the plane

I went to NY last Feb and loved it, I had so many reservation that were unfounded. We stayed in Hotel Mela (the link is below) I would advise you to go to tripadvisor website it is reviews on hotels from "normal" people and not travel experts, so you get an impartial review.

    Have fun xx
