This year I have made a few calls around my home to see what a few different companies are charging. H&R Block up the street told me, for my husband and I, the minimum would be $78.00 - WOW right! - I also called two other places I called were about the same. I guess it depends on the area and if you are filing electronically. I do my own as well, however I am a bookkeeper and do taxes regularly. I have told my clients that it does not hurt to pay someone different (other than yourself) every now and then to do your taxes. It is a good way to check to make sure you are getting all the tax breaks as possible. Which the IRS even states "tax avoidance is expected - tax evasion is NOT". So, be carefully - call around, and try someone, or do it yourself and call a CPA to have them review what you have done - most will not charge an arm or a leg.

But it can go as high as $1000 or more depending on the complexity of it, such as if you own your own business. It can also depend on who you go with. Where ever you go, it will depend on the complexity of the tax return. JH, Liberty, and Block all charge about the same but Block's preparers are a lot better trained and are typically more experienced than the other two. A CPA firm will charge 20-50% more.
