Could I eventually go blind?

I've always had quite bad eye sight. At school I refused to wear glasses (stupid I know) and used to squint to see the board. I relented at college and have worn either contacts or glasses ever since. I'm now in Uni.

The problem is, every time I go to the optician, my eyes have gone worse. They used to get a little worse everytime I went, the last time they had gotten considerably worse.

At the moment, without glasses, everything is a blur. I can't see the television or computer screen, just lights and colours, no words.

I'm so worried that I may eventually end up blind or with such poor eyesight that I have to wear those 'jam jar' glasses. I'm already restricted from wearing the thin frames because my lenses are thicker than them (not noticabley though).

Any advice?

No one goes blind from needing a stronger prescription. As long as you can see well with glasses or contacts on, there is no reason to think you are going blind.

Blindness is caused by trauma or disease, not from high prescriptions.

You must be approaching your mid twenties before long, which normally means your eyes will stabilize for a long time by then.

ok some people's eyesight just gets worse over time unfortunately you are one of those people. i dont see any risk in you going blind at all. and i wouldn't worry too much about the thickness of the lenses there are many different types of lenses out there that can make the lens light and thin looking. also another tip when buying glasses for a high prescription go for as small a frame as you can and stay away from the supra frames (frames with no bottom on them) plastic is also quite good for hiding lens thickness. there are many things you can do to hide lens thickness.hope i helped. and dont worry wearing glasses isn't as bad as it used to be i have people coming into my shop looking for glasses for fashion who dont even need them!

Like the second answerer, I also work in data entry, so I spend a lot of time on a computer. Even when I'm not at work, I'm online most of the time at home. I also think my eyesight has gotten worse since I started my job over a year ago. I got contacts earlier this year and they make a big difference. The reason for my bad eyesight may also be because I'm still a teenager and it could be hormonal crap or something. I'm not sure...all I know is that my eye sight sucks. :(

You should have asked the optician for an explanation whether you have glaucoma or whatever. If you are still not happy with his response, get your GP to refer you to Moorfield Eye Hospital, assuming you are in England. The doctors at Moorfield would make their recommendation if there really is something serious with your eyes. Have your eyes properly and thoroughly examined first before plunging blindly into any form of treatment. Excuse the pun.

Right unless you have progressive myopia, which is uncommon, it is extremely unlikely that you will loose your sight. Progressive myopia is in simple terms where the eye keeps growing making you increasingly short sighted and the retina becomes damaged. In twenty years of practise I came across just one case. So don't worry. Laser treatment is of course an option, however, being a bit old fashioned I have my doubts about the procedure. Your prescription should now settle down as you have reached maturity. You need to find out why your eyesight is getting worse (i.e. wrong type of contact lenses is a common cause just like using computer for long periods of time).

If you find the reason and are able to eliminate it, you should be ok. But as much as you probably won't go completly blind, you might get worse.

Unless your optician has said you'll go blind then it's unlikely that you will so you don't need to worry:-)
