Is telling respected science broadcasters to "burn in hell" good Christian behaviour ?

From The Guardian :

Sir David Attenborough has revealed that he receives hate mail from viewers for failing to credit God in his documentaries. In an interview with this week's Radio Times about his latest documentary, on Charles Darwin and natural selection, the broadcaster said: "They tell me to burn in hell and good riddance."

He goes on to explain his logical reasons against creationism :

"I think of a little child in east Africa with a worm burrowing through his eyeball. The worm cannot live in any other way, except by burrowing through eyeballs. I find that hard to reconcile with the notion of a divine and benevolent creator."

Attenborough went further in his opposition to creationism, saying it was "terrible" when it was taught alongside evolution as an alternative perspective. "It's like saying that two and two equals four, but if you wish to believe it, it could also be five ... Evolution is not a theory; it is a fact, every bit as much as the historical fact that William the Conqueror landed in 1066."

---

It's fine that some of the Christians in here don't believe in evolution, despite all evidence to the contrary, but would you send hate mail to everybody who disagrees with you ? And how does that sit alongside all that "Love thy Neighbour" stuff ?

Update:

Nathan : You say the spiritual nature of man cannot be denied ? That's a bold claim. Also you don't see any reason for conflict between religion and science - despite refuting evolution - which is scientific fact !! The quote "God helps those who help themselves", is a very easy quote to say - but impossible to prove - you'll find those people who help themselves will do better than those that don't (it doesn't need a fictional sky god).

Update 2:

It is true that we can't prove, once and for all, that Homo Sapiens has evolved from a common ancestor of other apes. But we can point at the fossil records and show many intermediate stages that suggest it to be true, and certainly has more evidence than the idea that man was created separately (that sounds like a very man-made religion type idea).

Update 3:

Nathan: you are twisting my words. Evolution is a fact, because it's been observed and tested. We have found a common ancestor of apes and great apes, but we haven't observed the evolution first-hand - so my point is that there's the evidence of us being evolved from a concestor, and it's seems to be the only sensible option - but we can't prove it (maybe a crazy sky god made the environment for humans to evolve from an ape-like creature - but at the last minute decided to do it herself (using 99% of the DNA, and keeping the coccyx etc) - but it seems a bit far-fetched)

Update 4:

edit : "we haven't observed THAT evolution first hand"

Update 5:

good tree : Thanks for the link to creationwise - in return I will suggest you read The Blind Watchmaker. Then when you've read both, make your mind up.

I am a fan of Sir David Attenborough, I feel it is unfortunate that he should receive hate mail. Moving on to the actual question though: It would appear that the ideals of being Christian are a stark contrast to being Christ-like. The ideas which Jesus preached were of the acceptance of others, and better treatment of your friends and neighbors. Do be mindful about the context and the times in which these thoughts came about though. This is the same Jesus who is said to have taken on the established Jewish priests, synagogues, and politics of the day. The same man who destroyed money making schemes, literally vandalizing them, to try and rid the world of such impurities. The definition of being Christ-like today would equate to somebody who spoke against what they feel are moral injustices, but to listen and accept every viewpoint with the least amount of resistance and prejudice. The hate mail being sent to Sir Attenborough is by people, who happen to be Christian, watching their religion losing creditability in the world and this forces them to change. If they are this frustrated then they would seem to have a very fickle sense of happiness and should be looked upon with love and understanding. Though their behavior is unacceptable and seemingly hateful, with constant reassurance and mutual respect they may learn to base their happiness on a belief in self, rather than a belief in Church.

merely 2 comments: a million) How come those "Christians" are against comparable-intercourse marriage? indexed right here are those few homosexuals who desire to devote to a minimum of one yet another! Their dating isn't one in each of lust yet of love and committment. Why are those human beings antagonistic to that? 2) The Bible holds NO condemnation for comparable-intercourse loving relationships! the only project you are able to glean from the passages in the Bible, while translated properly, is that ANY intercourse that's born of lust, and which procedes from forsaking God is misguided. ok so I lied, right this is type 3) All you bigoted, intollerant ************** accessible, end pretending to be Christian once you are able to't enable a real loving dating exist. Use some consumer-friendly sense for as quickly as. true love can not be incorrect. and end questioning which you in my opinion can discuss with God and then dictate to something of the international what he's meant to sentence. ================================ and BK: Who elected YOU God? You state: "however the existence variety separates them from God and God's order. that's what concerns me." You look to no longer have the slightest ability to understand what love and committment potential. A loving dedicated dating by no potential separates every physique from God. that's good for the folk in touch, and good for our society. end mouthing your lack of understanding and bigotry. You state: "many stuff that are risky: premarital intercourse, advertising of violence and indecency, self above others, unbridled greed... those are issues which will destroy down what's an invaluable order of society. Freedom comes with accountability." this is so nicely suited. yet i could upload, intollerance, bigotry, and merchandising injustice is likewise incorrect. and that's precisely your online business. Homosexuality is neither good or undesirable. basically the strikes of persons are. There are lustful human beings between gay human beings to boot as heterosexuals. yet how approximately permitting those gays who desire to help accountability, committment, and family contributors values have the help FROM YOU to do merely that? end being a hypocrite!

Sir David Atteboroughs view on Evolution is great from one perspective mainly as he say's logic. But since when has art followed logic?

If you consider the Biblical stories as is you may also have a rather dim view of their reality. It should be pointed out that the spiritual nature of man cannot be denied and this spiritual nature does not rely on logic. However in the "there is no God, and man is an animal" world, attempts at 'treating' or developing spirituality are made through logical analysis i.e psychology. In the "God created the universe" world our spiritual nature is treated or developed through religion.

Therefore both 'worlds' addreess the spirit.

Having said that, a very important Biblical quote should be remembered, "God helps those who help themselves" .

Too many so called religious people simply use religion as an excuse for NOT helping themselves, and that includes opening their eyes to realities. Whereas I do not accept evolution, I do not deny what is valid about it, and neither do I see any reason for conflict between religion and science I find they work quite harmoniously together.

Another Biblical quote " There are none so blind as those who will not see" would apply quite adequately to those religious fanatics who close their eyes and attack other points of view, especially when those points of view have a great deal of validity. Sir David can relax and realise he has more chance of a great afterlife then those who attack him!

Source(s): Tooniron: You started your comment to me by saying that evolution is a scientific fact, then go on to say that it's true that we haven't yet found a common ancestor. Find the basics of your theories and then you have facts. Evolution cannot prove the origins of man....that's a fact. Secondly, you seem to have misunderstood my comment about helping yourself. It could be that you have never experienced the creative power of mind. If you have had that experience you will find that the creative purpose overcomes all difficulties even if there was no logical way of overcoming them. I meant exactly what you said, those who help themselves do better than those who don't. Now anyone who has a serious interest in spiritual development would be limitting themselves to the study of one religion. Study some of the ancient texts and you will find some amazing stories of how man was created, some of them are extremely scientific. Whatever you choose to believe you cannot deny certain oddities about mankind that cannot be explained by science. I was just talking to someone who's sister escaped a possibly fatal accident a few days ago, by having a certain thought flash into her head, which caused her to take preventive action. Now is that evolution? Have you ever looked at your stars? Discussed psychic ability? Been to see a medium or done the tarot? Although there are many fakes there are many doccumented examples of supernatural powers which have no credible explanation, and that makes my claim to mans spiritual nature much less bold. You started off this question by seemingly wishing to encourage a balanced view, but ended by appearing to have only asked it for the purpose of attacking those who recognise their spiritual nature, which basically makes you no better than those you are complaining about. No, I did not twist your words and secondly I stand by my statement that evolution cannot prove mans origins. Check this site and note the word 'Theory'. http://www.allaboutscience.org/evolution-of-man.ht... Particularly note the section about scientific proof. The FACT is that evolution is a THEORY.

I don't have anything to add to what has already been said.

I just want to say this is a very interesting question and I am in awe of the amazing quotes by Attenborough.

I would never condemn anyone to hell. Sir David Attenborough is entitled to his opinion and I am entitled to mine. If we were to meet we could try to convince each other that we were right- an interesting debate, but in the end only God can convince either of us of the right way and I would like to think I could still part friends with Sir David.

Short answer, no it's definately not, and those Christians should sit down quietly with God and ask Him what He thinks of it. He is NOT pleased.

But I think that stating that evolution is a proven fact is dangerous, as it is not proven any more than creation is.

  • 1 decade ago

Wow, that sounds JUST like when the Pope put Galileo under house arrest for having the nerve to suggest that maybe Copernicus was right and the Earth wasn't the center of the universe...

Jeez, how many times has religion been proven wrong by science? I don't have enough fingers or toes to keep track.

Some people have no respect. David Attenborough is a brilliant man that has brought his passion into our lounge rooms for years, thankfully.

Why would I send hate mail to people who disagree with me?

Because I've already sent hate mail to people who agree with me, and I've got too much time on my hands.

    Here's your sign.

Yes, it is. Don't forget what a horrible religion Xtianity is when you get down to it. Showing any degree of tolerance or humanity is actually bad christianity!
