Should Lynyrd Skynyrd continue after the death of Billy Powell?

Larkin Collins ( father of Allen Collins), Judy Van Zant Jenness (widow of Ronnie Van Zant) and Gary Rossington ( sole survivor of the original line up) have control over the Skynyrd name. An agreement was maid after the band reformed that there should be 3 original members in the band for the band to continue. After the death of bassist Leon Wilkeson, the number was lowered to 2. Larkin Collins said that it is possible that could be lowered to 1 if Gary Rossington should want to continue.

What about you? Should Skynyrd carry on?

I'm not sure, but, in a way, I hope they continue. All I know is there must be one hell of a jam session going on with Ronnie Van Zant, Allen Collins, Billy Powell, and the others with Duane Allman sitting in.

Now it's just Gary Rossington left unless you count guitarist Ricky Medlocke, who was Skynyrd's drummer before they were signed. By then Ricky was in Blackfoot. The last time I saw Skynyrd was in 2005 and it just didn't feel right. Only Gary and Ricky on guitars (the famed triple attack gone) and Billy off to the left as usual, pounding away. Billy Powell wasn't the most gifted pianist in the world but he made the most of what he had. You could hear his honky-tonk background in every solo. No soft-touch Floyd Cramer for that boy. I was privileged to meet Billy long ago and he was among the nicest rockers ever. "Tuesday's Gone" will forever be my favorite for its composition and reflection but an overlooked gem from "The Last Rebel" is the song "Born To Run" about a truck driver being pushed to the edge by the new economy and having to carry on to keep his family. It has all the ingredients of a Skynyrd masterpiece.

It's not about the band. It's about the brand.

Do you realize that the band "War" is still together with a clean slate of musicians, after 40 years? I know I'm into diff. areas of music here, but even the Beach Boys still play & attract large crowds.. with what? 1-2 original members?

You think, after 30 years of selling tickets, drawing crowds, earning & playing songs that are a sure thing (to make money)... and a proven track record of a stronger Southern Rock brand, than just about anyone else not name Allman.. that they'd let a little thing like another death slow them down? there was only 2 left, and now there's 1. If there was none, they'd still be heirs to the family business.

I think so, as long as there is a Van Zant singing. I saw them 2 years ago and I thought they were really good. They are a southern rock institution! I'd hate to see them to go on with like David Lee Roth as the front man and just turn into a joke for the sake of keeping it together. But a new keyboardist...I could live with that.

i'd say that the deceased members would want them to continue and not let the music stop. as long as there is one surviving member then the legend of skynyrd should continue and when he dies it's up to the cover bands to keep it going.....by the way there is a cover band called Poison Whiskey that you would have to see to believe.

Skynyrd was finished when they lost Van Zandt a very long time ago. I never listened to the "new" LS.

Even with all this unforseen tragedy, I think that Johnny should definitely kkep the name and things going. They still make great music.
