Copyright of corporate logo?

If a logo is designed for your business (or in my case a school), does the business own copyright of that logo, or does it have to be registered? If someone has used your logo on a website without your permission do you have the right to demand that they take it off and how would you do this?

Copyright versus trademarks is a bit tricky. You can have a copyright on artwork & text without registering it (someone steals your photos etc) but with logos you're also treading into trademark territory which can be a different ballgame.

If someone is using yours, I think I'd at least get started on trademarking it before they do, because if they do it, the onus is on you to fight them.

The logo has to be registered in order for the school to have the copyright. Without the copyright your school does not have any claim against the users of the logo. Obtain a reputable patent attorney and have the logo registered.
