Linux Ubuntu is acting up and freezes in Firefox etc....problems?

Ok I have a partitioned linux ubuntu and Windows vista HD. I used linux 90% of the time! I keep it upgraded but it cant retrieve the files it needs for Avant Window manager no biggy. But since the last upgrade everytime I am on the internet for a period of time the internet screen will fade black and then come back after a few seconds like its freezing. It also says that certain programs cant be opened from the adminastrative menu. I am not sure but I have no firewall for it and dont think you even have to have one. I have been using ubuntu for probably four months now with no problems til now! Also starting today when I try to use my vista it wont even start windows at all. I need someone that nows alot about ubuntu and nows what they are talking about to tell me if there is something wrong with the upgrade or maybe possibly Windows Vista got a virus and it carried over to Ubuntu some how!!???? The last time i was on vista was last night and it worked fine now it wont do anything!! Can someone please tell me what i can do. I really dont want to have to reinstall Linux and Windows again. The hard drive is brand new BTW!!

You have mentioned several problems. Let me try 1 at a time.

    1. You don't give any specifics about your problem with vista. Exactly what happens when you try to boot into vista? Can you even login? Are you using a firewall and have you run an anti-virus and anti spyblocker?

    2. There is no way for a virus in vista to affect ubuntu.

    3. That is good that you have ubuntu up to date and all updates installed. When you say firefox is freezing I assume you mean that you cannot do anything with it but the rest of your ubuntu system is working fine. I don't know if this will help but I did find one guy who found a solution.

The fact that your screen goes all black makes me suspect that the problem may not be firefox but your graphics system. The second link is about avant, and if this is what you are using it could be causing your problem with ubuntu. Avant is a very new navigation system and has many bugs. It is still under development and does not always work well. If you run a program like this you have to expect problems and be prepared to read the forums on how to correct the bugs.

I would suggest that you turn off avant and go back to the basic desktop system and see what happens to firefox.

    4. If you want to open a menu item in the administrative menu you have to have the password. Have you tried to enter the password when it asks?

Good luck, hope this helps to get you system working better.
