Sea shelling is one thing so cal is not really known for. I have found live sand dollars and broken ones, rarely a whole one that is clean enough to take home, the live ones will smell when they die, so its best to look at them and put them back into the water, besides those the open clams of small sizes and not reall colorful but fun to find are there, and few other really interesting shells. I would suggest that you may enjoy going to the tide pools in Corona Del Mar. You may not remove anything from those because they are protetected. Its a nice beach and you can stroll around the tide pools and see anenomis and such. Huntington Beach is closest, if you go in the late afternoon or/and after high tides are receeding is the best time to look and you can take all you find there. Corona Del Mar is around a twenty minute drive south from there. Google it.

Go to the mission at San Juan Capistrano. Old Mexican architecture. Take a commuter train into Hollywood, a short hop away, and look at the legend footprints in the courtyard of mann's chinese theater. And just down the road from that, literally a couple of blocks, is Rodeo Drive -- you'll see some stars there. Also, there are two Getty Museums. One has ancient artifacts and is close to Malibu. The other has great paintings from the Renaissance to the end of the 20th century, all names you will recognize, and it is in west LA. (You need to make reservations for both Gettys ahead of time, and you can print out your tickets/reservations from online at home before you go.)
