Can a 2nd Comcast DVR box be added to a 2nd tv?

We currently have a Motorola 3416DTHD cable box. Recently we found a second box at a garage sale. Will we be able to use the second box? I have heard that if you turn it in to Comcast, they will give you one. Is this true? Will you be charged for the second box?

Update:

I will add that it DOES say Comcast on it.

I think the answers to your 3 questions are

    1. probably not

    2. not true

    3. probably not, because it probably won't work.

These digital boxes have to be registered by serial number with Comcast. When they start up, they talk to the cable head end. The garage sale box might be able to tune some channels, but it won't get the guide, premium channels, On Demand, etc. without being registered with Comcast.

You could try registering the box with Comcast. At the very least, they will charge you a monthly "extra outlet" fee. But that would be less than the DVR rental fee.
