Whats the best way to get local gigs for an indie band?
I'm currently working in an indie band and we're ready to start gigging. What should I be prepared for? I've read in the past that press kits with Demos and Picture, but is that necessary to send out to all the bars in the area? Should I just call the bars, and what should I expect and mention about payment, if any? (Our draw would probably be only two dozen people at most at this point)
Any advice is welcome. The band myspace with demos is in my profile if that would help with advice. Thanks!

I'm a Solo Artist of 5 year myself...I was also a former Drum Roadie for a former friends bands as well so I saw a lot of stuff because I was there in the clubs and Backstage too. I also worked a Rehearsal Studios back in 2002 in Garden Grove, Ca called Sound Arena.
I'd say have a main person in your band to do the negotiating with the Club Owners because they will offer you a price for playing there. Down the Road , you mioght even want to hire a "Booking Agent" or a Band Manager too to help out...thats their only job. To book gigs & get you going out there.
Also, some places you might even have to play a few places for free on a Bill with other bands just to get some local band exposure and pass out a few free CD demos in the crowd...that also works too. So keep that in mind when doing gigs because you guys are just starting to gig. Also, if you are only drawing about 24 people...I'd say try gigging at B-days parties, Weddings, Swap Meets, Battle of the Band contests, Talent Contests, Bar Mitvahs, etc.
This also works too for bands just starting out...
Honestly, most club venue sizes are between 300 to 2,000 people max. You will find small bars that size, but not no night club that small. I've clubbed in Los Angeles from 1993 to 2003 and most of the club sizes here are 300 to 2,000 people. It really depsnd on where you play...
Also, here are some other sources for booking gigs at too. There is good info, advice & wisdom on this stuff here on these sites
www.billboard.com
www.musicconnection.com
www.performermag.com
www.L2Pnet.com
www.hothousestudios.com
Good luck ...

i'm in Denver too! I ought to agree, maximum human beings only prefer to pass to golf equipment each and every of the time as a substitute of going to concert activities to easily help bands that are in choose of our help. I easily have not heard of any of the bands you pronounced, different than for Devotchka. i replaced into under the impact that most of the community bands in or around Denver have been hippy/indie music, so thank you for posting those. I of course would desire to get extra into the community scene, as a substitute of putting up with the mainstream rubbish. thank you for the advice!
