Did people from the Middle East ever come to California in the late 1800s?
I'm doing some research for a book, and I'm trying to determine if any people from the Middle East (Arabia) traveled to the "Old West" in the late 1800s. Does anyone know of a reference saying whether they did or not?

If Middle Eastern people came here in the 1800s came here, it would most likely have been through Ellis Island, not the West Coast. San Francisco was the "Ellis Island" of the West Coast and Chinese came through SF and settled all over CA and had China towns all over, including a large one in SF. Then one of the immigration acts set limits on the numbers of all groups to immigrate here. The Middle East was very "third world" at that time and India was still under British rule I think. We didn't start getting a large number of middle eastern immigrants until the early 1980s or so.
