Can an IDE hard drive be connected via USB?

I have an old IDE hard drive from a 2000 compaq presario desktop that I need to recover a few programs from. My new dell desktop has no IDE connections to the motherboard as the hard drive is of the SATA variety. A coworker tells me there is a cable out there that can connect an internal hard drive to a desktop externally via a USB cable. Is this the case and where can I get one?

There are devices out there specifically for SATA and IDE but the best solution is a joint SATA IDE to USB cable. I've referenced one bellow.

Yes, it can. Now I am using an IDE hard drive connected to USB, but you must a system consists of a casing and an IDE hard drive inside, a power supply from your home electricity (your country 110 v), to 12 v in hard drive and a USB cable. Sorry I can not tell where to buy in your country (may be computer parts dealer), because I live in Indonesia, here we easily find at a computer' shop

You should get an External IDE hard drive case. They are pretty cheap ($15-25). You open the case, plug in the IDE hard drive, close the case, plug in to AC power, then plug the external case into your PC via USB or firewire.

You can get them at http://www.newegg.com/ or http://www.geeks.com/

Yes. I actually have a kit that allows me to connect drives via usb. I have several times recovered files using this method. As long as your hard drive still works, you can do this.

Yes there are, However for safety reasons, I would suggest getting an external hard drive enclosure that uses an IDE connection. (also known as PATA or EIDE)
