I/II or 1/11 definition on a remote?

I have found this on my remote and i am slighty confused? I tried google and just got too complicated answer.

    It actually is i / ii not 1 /11

    Roman numeral one and two...

    Now that we have cleared that up, it sounds like that remote operates MORE THAN ONE VCR or DVD or Set top Box or.....

    That's what the I / II is for.
