White People: How do you suggest we "Get Over It"?

I hear many White people say that minorities should "get over" the past. As if the past does not effect the present... so since this is something so many want so badly.... I would like to ask you. How do you suppose minorities go about "getting over" racism/discrimination/slavery/crap like that?

Update:

fox_map... i ask this question because I believe there HAS to be an answer besides "get over it" or just hating people for all eternity til our planet destroys itself. But thanks for answering... Thank you all.

Update 2:

You speak of me "playing the race card" what the HECK do I get for asking this question Y!A? Nothing. In fact I lose 5 (meaningless) points!

And I am not starting trouble, I am trying to express my views... trying to get someone ANYONE to look beyond their experiences and understand where I am coming from.

Thank You!!! the ONLY reason they say blacks should "get over it" is because they don't want to talk about it themselves because they haven't gotten over anything. If the past was SO LONG AGO, wouldn't white people be able to talk about it like nothing???

I'm taking a history class this semester when they talk more about slavery, and my prof talks to my class like they are 2 yr olds like he has to soften everything up, I sit there like "my great great grandfather was a slave master and raped my g-g grandmother, and I've actually had old cousins and great uncles hung from trees!-and you're trying to make them feel okay about just TALKING about the subject! those kids need to grow some cojones!"

FOX MAPLE: just PLEASE stop thinking about it in such a close minded way. We aren't slaves and you aren't a slave master, it doesn't take a genius to see that, we want white people to recognize what slavery did to the black community, it was 300 years, not 3. Do people think those slaves vanished with the emancipation proc. no, they didn't they raised the next generation with the same mind frame in the best way they could, and it continues in a lot of ways, but lots of whites don't see that. They only see that slavery ended and can't seem to connect any dots. To me it just seems really stupid. But then again, most white people in this country do come from immigrants and they have NO connection to its history until their family arrived so they don't understand.

Fox Maple MORE: I just think if anyone ever thinks the problems with race in this country are going to change, we should get to know a bit more about each other and where we are really coming from. It seems hard to do when someone is white and lives around only white people and is constantly being bombarded with images of "ghetto, ignorant" black people. Angry black women and dangerous black men. Too many people only see what they want to see about black people. They do it w/out ever knowing any black person, or at least not one that fits that stereotype (and they separate the "good" blacks from the rest of us). I just wish more people would wake up. We are all human, black people aren't crazy, you can trace almost all the problems in the black community directly back to slavery~like single parent homes, that didn't just happen yesterday, its a cycle thats been repeated since we got here.

Source(s): SEE what you made me do by asking this question!! I just got outta class I didn't want to have to think! lol I'm only playing :-D good question though, too bad you can't get any good answers from them.

what do you suggest white people do? This is an honest answer and I'm really not looking for a fight with you, but I think a lot of white people are baffled as to what we are supposed to do. We were not slave owners. Neither were most of our ancestors. I know my ancestors were poor northern immigrants that had nothing to do with slavery. No blacks living today were slaves, or even knew slaves. Whites and blacks I would say are equally racist. Some people are extreme, but many people aren't racist at all. It doesn't matter what the situation is though, you are going to hate us....so what do you want to hear?

EDIT: Don't get me wrong. I am fully aware of our nations history. I know that the minute slavery was outlawed didn't mark the end of injustice. However, there is no one that can change the past. Even you say that you don't want people to just hate each other until the end of eternity. The road goes both ways. Both whites AND blacks are going to have to give up their prejudices if we are going to treat each other properly.

how do you get over it?

    you honestly dont.

there will honestly always be something that reminds you of such terrible things. whether it was something like slavery in the past...or some kind of abuse in the present day.

But you can learn to deal with it.

if slavery bothers you....remind yourself that while it was terrible...thank God ..you did not have to live it.

If you deal with racism...hold your head up high and never ever stoop the that level. Believe it is beyond you.

If a past you want to forget keeps rearing its ugly head...remind yourself that it is just that...The Past. And that it can no longer rule you.

Listen hon...im just a white woman...

But I am a white woman that has dealt with her own hell. physical, sexual and mental abuse....I grew up around really...atrocious ppl..to put it nicely.

I in my own way...do understand where you are coming from. Because I too have been told to " get over it"

But it's not easy...you just honestly havetot learn to deal with it. because you honestly cannot " get over it"

girl you took the words right out of my mouth. anytime i hear that phrase i go insane. like they think we live in a completely just and equal world and history from just 50 -60 years back even is irrelevant. i swear i wonder what white people teach their children because ive met some ignorant, historically illiterate, and oblivious white kids my age as well as beyond. the things my own mother who is 45 tells me about certain people on her job and the discussions they have about race truly shock me. im 19 btw and black : ]

How has slavery affected you directly? I'm fairly certain it hasn't. Just like I have never owned a slave. I am not racist and have no problem with minorities but here I am having to defend myself because I am white. The only problem I have is with people like you who are here to start trouble.

because they want everyone to just forget about it like its a fight between two elementary school kids. just a spanky and thats it. i would not doubt they would last 5 seconds in my shoes. u can already see it just read the comments they are already offended imagine if u would say lets discriminate against whites and i assure u they will start murders and trouble to save themselves. and NO we never wave the race card infront of white ppl's face. thats the stupid ppl that always keep saying it. no one is starting trouble its just hard to hear the truth isnt it?

how about white ppl get enslaved and treated like crap and everyone rape their women and we just tell white ppl to get over it? hard to hear isnt it?

  • Quit bringing it up, and quit playing the race card, and how do you suggest white people put up with having the race card waved around in our faces, and not being able to do the same.

the reason why us whites say to get over it is because people like you do nothing else but bring up race in everything. you talk about white people yet you don't expect us to defend ourselves and when we do you call us racist. what would you like us to do about slavery? please let me know because i'm dying to help you get over something that happened a couple hundred years ago.
