What is a yarn sleeve?
I saw this item at a dollar store. Of course I asked the staff and no one knew, but one of them opened the package to look at it.
It is a long 'tube' of plastic mesh, but it doesn't look as though it would stretch to fit over a skein of yarn, so...

It will stretch over. You put it over your yarn at the beginning of your project. It keeps your yarn from falling apart/tangling when using it in from a skein.

Yes, a mesh bag of any kind will work just as well. It will stretch -- that is what mesh does. It will fit. It is made to keep the ball in place and not get dirty as you are using it -- you pull the yarn from the inside of the ball. They are sometimes called a "yarn bra". I've used that foam mesh they put around some Chinese pears... they work very well! Recycle as much as you can.
