Was BJ Penn hyping up the fight?

I hope he was, cause all the $hit he talked and he got grinded down by GSP. Penn is still one of my faves. But, when does he have to talk that much crap and not back it up. I felt so sorry for him. Anyone else knows if he was just "selling tickets" by all the trash talk?

Update:

GSP was for sure the better fighter. BJ's spirit was like......WTF did I get myself into?

Penn is great but he moves around in weight divisions too much. GSP was just too much for him to handle, that's just a fact.

I'm not a fan of talking trash. I personally think it makes you look ridiculous. At the same time I understand that it is used to get inside the head of your opponent and this can give you an advantage when done well. Ali was great at this.

Now trash talk is only partly about gaining a psychological edge but has a lot more to do with marketing. Just more reason why I'm put off when I hear fighters, some with great ability, shouting like a kid in a school yard.

Penn needs to zip it and start focusing on training much more. He may be a prodigy but without training he'll just keep getting beaten by more dedicated and fit fighters.

I don't think he cared about selling tickets. I think it was a few things..

like 1. the UFC people where purposely trying to get him to say stuff. If you watched the show they would say things like " GSP says your conditioning is going to be bad" so Penn would naturally get upset and say stuff.

    2. I think he was just having fun. I mean can you REALLY see him trying to kill GSP? Or go to the death? If you took those statements seriously than your a something! lol...

    3. I think he doesn't like how GSP is always trying so hard to be nice so again he was attacking him verbally to simply try to get in his head or something. Maybe it worked so good that GSP decided to use Vaselin! lol.

    No.

Simply put, GsP and Penn are of similar Skill Levels with Penn having a slight advantage.

Penn came in the cage at 168, and GsP at 187, thats 19lbs of difference, and while GsP was used to carrying that weight, Penn is used to fighting around 160 in the LW division.

He truely thought he could move back up to WW and do what he did 5 Yrs ago at WW , but hes not 25 anymore, hes not as flexible as he was, and simply put, he cant expect his body to carry that xtra weight against a fighter who's naturally bigger, and 20lbs heavier on fight night.

Penn is all Heart for moving up and fighting a large opponent, i dont see GSP moving up to challenge Silva anytime in the near future although his walk around weight is higher then that of the 185 fight weight.

And Lycann or w.e, Trash talking is a way to motivate yourself for better and harder training, if it wasnt for trash talking the Ali Vs Frazier Fights wouldnt have been so great, the Tyson vs Holyfield Fights wouldnt have sold what they did, and you wouldnt even know the name of Roy Jones Jr.

Penn trains just as hard as anyone now, and it not disputed that he does, he simply was out of a weight class that he belongs in, and Gsp was the better fighter at 170, but the better fighter in general is Penn Skill wise.

1st of all Bj no longer coaching is a load of crap. Bj needed human beings to think of he didnt practice nicely so he would have an excuse of y he lost..i mean ruled for 3 rounds. Im particular bj became into coaching his *** off for this combat.Grease or no grease Bj in no way had a gamble.

lol the only thing i wish i would've done differently is to of bet on that fight, i knew for a FACT that GSP was gonna DOMINATE bj WHO>? bj is one of the most overrated fighters ever. and he's got a big mouth, my boy opened up a can of whoop *** on him, and did u see that they said that the fight was stopped because "do to referee """ADVICE"""............ya we saw bj's brother throw in the towel, when bj was talking to him... HE QUITE, and after all that **** about saying georges is a quitter.. serves him right.

I almost gaurantee you are right, did it seem to you like he hated the guys guts? I think it was more of a friendly-but-ultra-competitive thing. We will know for sure when we hear some more from him. That quitter thing is what really makes him look like a *****ss though. That "I will kill you but its nothing personal" remark leads me to believe so anyways.

GSP greased his body to ensure that he wouldn't get caught in a submission.
