Payroll Glitch? Now I have to pay for it.?
So as you all know it's time for taxes. The problem is I might owe the IRS because of my work. I filed a "0" for my W-4 which allows my to get more taken out of my check but get back more $$ at the beginning of the year. THE PROBLEM IS...my job never took out any taxes.
My work said it was a glitch in the system and that I should have been looking at my paystubs more carefully.
I looked at my payroll stubs where it tells me what is withheld and there isn't even a place that says anything about "Federal withholding tax". If they didn't take anything out, shouldn't it have said "$0.00"?
Can I legally do anything or am I screwed because the computer made a mistake?
Sorry I meant to say I filed a "1". Also, they took out for SS and Medicare but nothing else.
Also: I am paid on salary so I cannot say, unfortunately, that I pay too much attention to the paystubs. Can any of you honestly say that you check all of them to make sure your job is taking the right amount out?
The company has admitted fault but has not offered a solution yet. I am still open to any helpful input you guys may have.
Thanks for the answers, and please learn from my costly mistake.

Unfortunately, it is your responsibility to make sure the proper taxes are withheld from your paycheck. Not only will you have to pay this back to the IRS, but you may be charged a penalty for under-withholding (and this depends on the amount of your income).
Also: If you are reporting 0 deductions and getting a refund every year, then you should consider raising your number of deductions. At least take one for yourself. Remember: a tax refund is YOUR MONEY and you're just loaning it to the government for free. Don't do it!

Unfortunately there is nothing you can do as far as the IRS is concerned because it is the same as if someone opted to pay less taxes throughout the year so their paycheck could be bigger. Next time please make sure you look at these mistakes some jobs unfortunately make. it sounds like you may have to pay some taxes.

lol are you serious? What would you be able to sue for? You got your money, you just got it every other week instead of in February. And besides you saw they werent holding anything out for the last 12 months, did you think it was in a secret account that your boss was wanting to surprise you with at the end of the year?

Did you get a W2 or 1099? Was ss/medicare paid or not. And by the way - it's your responsibility to review your stubs - so legally it's always on you - not a computer.
