Can I stay connected to work vpn 24/7 if so, what's the downside?

I run a network at work but don't know alot about vpns. If I remained connected to my work vpn from home 24/7 using the cisco client what would happen? Does it eat up bandwidth etc?

Unless you work 24/7, you will waste power keeping your vpn client up on your home computer.

At work does the vpn terminate inside from a firewall? If so, the firewall may drop an inactive vpn connection. You may run into difficulties trying to re-establish it immediately.

It really depends on the data rate of the VPN host you are connecting to. If you are connected to a VPN endpoint that has slower bandwidth than your own ISP, then you will have slower internet.

Even if both ends of the internet are fast (local and VPN endpoint) you will still have a lag because of the VPN, but it shouldn't be that noticeable for web browsing & email.

If you have a need for fast internet on your local computer, I would recommened you disconnect the VPN before you being to download. Otherwise, all internet traffic will go through the VPN.

I suggest employing http://www.vpnpower.net/ to unblock websites. I am using their services for more than 3 years without having difficulties.
