Word Problem (Algebra)?

Two buses leave Atlanta at the same time, one traveling west at 40 miles per hour and the other traveling north at 30 miles per hour. When Will they be 400 miles apart?

    You are basically solving a right angle triangle.

    Formula is:

    c = √ a² + b²

    x = hours

    West = 40x

    North = 30x

    400 miles = √ 160,000

    160,000 = (40x)² + (30x)²

    Its 8 hours, for them to be 400 miles apart.

    160,000 = (40 x 8)² + (30 x 8)²

    160,000 = 320² + 240²

    160,000 = 102,400 + 57,600
