Capture sunlight to produce sugars. Autotroph means it feeds itself. (Auto + troph..means something like feeding? food?) Algae make food for themselves, out of themselves, using photosynthesis, being plants and all.

Autotroph means "make their own food" so the only autotrophs are the organisms that use the sun (photosynthesis!)
