Any tips for feeding a 9.5 month old solids other than baby food?

I didn't have this problem with my daughter...she ate solids right away without a problem. My son won't. I try putting stuff in his mouth for him to taste and he makes a scrunchy face and spits it out and if he does try to get it down, he gags like crazy! I was thinking of mixing mushy rice into his baby food as a start...any other thoughts/ideas. Help!

Update:

Thanks for the tips but let me just add that I've been putting food on his highchair for about 3-4 weeks now and he won't put it in his mouth. He just plays with it. I keep doing it hoping he'll eventually put it in his mouth.

carry on with the baby food if you want but add more texture...ie cooked soft vegetables cut up......give him finger foods as snacks and with his meal. place them on his tray and feed him when you eat:) grated cheese, tuna flakes, cheerios and puffs, spaghetti cut up or any pasta, can be added to his baby food or srved as a finger food. if he gets soem in his hands guide his hand to his mouth:) hell soon get the idea tell him its nums nums and make a big deal about be enthuaiastic and eat some too and show him how much your enjopying it. he will come round goodluck:)))) p.s also let him have his own spoon to practise and allow him to be messy:)

playing with his food is good:)))) its helps with eye/hand coordination and encourages the pincer grasp:)

We are having the exact same problem. My son literally gags on the food and ended up throwing up when night when I gave a try of pureed turkey.

I am just giving it time at this point- my son is 10.5 months old. He was 7 weeks early. I have no idea if that could something to do with his general lack of interest in food.

We've put Cheerios on his tray since they're one of the safest foods and he just plays. We give him a toy, it goes in the mouth. Food- it gets ignored.

We jsut keep trying- and then if he still hasn't showed any progress by his 12 month appt we'll address it at the Drs office I guess.

We just keep exposing him to new things- all the time.

My son also doesn't like sippy cups- which is OK. We can jump to regular cups (he likes those), it's just going to be a big mess for me!!

My son took a long time to learn to eat from a bottle- he was fed through a tube when he was first born- so maybe he's just taking his time with foods. Everything else, I think he's advanced!

i'm so sorry to inform you this yet you're incorrect and your daughter is sweet. commonplace toddlers thrive on breast milk on my own through the first 12 months making solids till then purely prepare. toddlers must be presented to solids at the same time as they bodily are waiting to self feed, which takes position between 6-8 months. Solids do not commence replacing milk feeds till in the direction of one million 12 months. All a common 6 month previous desires is 4 solid nursings an afternoon to get all of his nutritional desires met. at the same time as i'd be worried that he would get thirsty between feeds there is not any longer some thing extremely to be stricken about. you have not any reason to be worried. trust your daughter to furnish him solids at the same time as he's waiting. ask for forgiveness to her, tell her that you've been incorrect, and enable her be. You raised her, now enable her develop her toddler.

Don't put it in his mouth. Put in on his tray and let him feed himself.
