Is a "delivery charge" the same as a tip?

I ordered pizza from Papa John's tonight and there was a 2.00 delivery charge added to the total price of the pizza. I tipped the driver a small amount anyway, but I'd like to know for next time.

when I worked at dominos, we got a dollar of the delivery charge which was somewhere around 1.35 when I started, the delivery charge kept increasing, we still only got a dollar of it. we made less then minimum wage, around 4-5 compared to the 7-8 the inside crew made. the percentage probably varies from place to place, but as a general rule, no, drivers are not getting the delivery charge, at least not all of it. the owners would never give us a straight answer as to why we weren't getting the fee and that's exactly what we told the customer in person or on the phone when they asked. we get a dollar, that's it. that was purely to cover the cost of gas, which usually balanced out at the end of the night, but in no way covered the cost of wear and tear on our vehicles, or any other associated vehicle expenses.

I am an Australian visiting the US wanting to do the right thing regarding tipping. It looks to me like delivery charges are a scam as they encourage you not to tip the driver. Thanks for the comments I will make sure to tip drivers in future knowing that they are not getting the delivery charges in most cases or even if they are it is not covering their transport costs,

A delivery charge is a charge added by the restaurant to help cover the cost of the delivery. You are required to pay that charge. A tip is money you give to the driver to say "thanks" for him getting it to you quickly and in good condition. How much you pay is up to you and you are not required to give any tip at all (but you should). The drivers are usually paid minimum wage and they depend on their tips to actually make enough money to make the job worthwhile.

Not really. My brother used to work for papa johns and he only got 65 cents of that delivery fee and ONLY if he has the little sign on top of the car that can ruin your paint if you take it off and put it on to much. but i used to deliver for a smaller company and i used to get all of the $2 but no, papa johns does not leave the drivers with a good tip.

The delivery charge goes in Papa Johns pocket. The tip goes in the drivers pocket.

the delivery charge is there in case there is people that don t tip. so it is a tip but the company s are greedy and take some of it.

The delivery charge goes to the pizza company while your tip goes to the delivery boy.

That the ways it is when you want something to come to you there is always a charge That's the reason they always ask pick up and delivery

No it is not a tip. It is what you pay the restaurant because they have to pay the deliver man and pay for the car/gas to get it to you. And 2$ would be a small tip anyway, but it does not go to the delivery man
