What words have you taught your dog?

other than basic Obedience commands that the rest of us could teach ours dogs.

The best word I've taught mine is 'go find'.

One more word can be added to 'go find' and you've got a working dog. LOL!

An average dog can learn up to 300 words or key commands, as dogs have the mental capacity of a two year old human being. Also dogs can learn more than one language at a time. I taught one of my shepherds in English and German, and a friend of mine did the same with English and Spanish.

My first two shepherds knew all regular obedience commands plus many tricks and other useful commands, like "close the door please?" or the difference between right, left, up, down, over and under. They knew when to pick up their dinner bowls or how to pick up and deliver a dropped hammer or screw driver.

They could climb ladders, track & quarter an area for coins or lost keys. They knew the names for many objects such as ball, peanut, biscuit, scissors, paper, rock, book, glove. etc.,etc, Once U get going reaching a dog these things it is just too much fun. My dogs knew the difference between "wait" and "stay", between "down" and "go lay down". My dogs would guard a baby or "tree" a criminal. It all depends on how much time and effort U want to put into this kind of work.

You'd be better off training your dog in obedience commands. It may not learn a 100 English words but it will be well behaved.

    Close the door

Get your (toy)...My dog is 9 months old, and already knows most of her toys by their individual names.

    Go get (family member)

If you use a funny voice and say "Oh my Katie", our lab just goes crazy. She'll suddenly get really hyper and dash around the house, but she's normally about as active as a potato. I've never known another dog that does that.

search, that's her search and find the treat command. i point and she sniffs around on the trail i point.

Foot, i hold her foot and say foot and she picks it up (well not so easily now, she's a 12 y/o dalmation so i cut her nails with her just standing now) but when she was younger it was a great command. you could cut her nails or check her paw if she was limping.

crawl, it's just a fun command shen she army crawls.

I guess the only one that I've really taught other than obedience is toy. I can get them to get specific toys.

    Besides all the basic ones:

"Who's your momma?" (She'd run to me.)

"Who's your dadda?" (She'd run to my ex.)

"Who's the baby?" (Shed spin around in a circle. She knew the baby was her.) LOL!

We also played hide and seek. I kid you not. I always had to hide though. She was so much fun. *tears*
