Lines on computer screen.?

The problem has only just appeared . We are running XP home , there is a black pencil thin line vertically in the centre of the screen about 5cm long , it is about 15cm below the top. To the right of this and lower down is another line only 2-5cm also vertical. Now here is the weird thing ( well to me anyway ) is that this fault only appears on the Desktop , Changing the wall paper picture has no effect. I have tried everything I can think of with settings and appearance to no no avail . Any ideas at all would be appreciated .

Cheers Pete

Update:

PS, The lines are vertical ( North South )

The monitor is a 17in LCD.

The fault ONLY appears on the Desk Top. Nothing else ! so not a monitor fault nor a magnetise fault

Since the symptom only appears on the desktop, The problem is not the monitor. I would try updating the video driver or if you already have the newest one, try an older one. If the problem is still there, I'd say it's probably a corrupted windows file. You could try using windows restore and restore back a couple of days to before the problem showed up?

I know with large CRT monitors that was often common.

I had a HUGE 22" CRT and it had a horizontal line going through it 2cm from the top.

It could be that the monitor or another device is crapping out (unlikely though).

Ensure your video connection (cable from monitor to back of computer) is properly connected.

From the information given it sounds to me like there is a circuits failure inside the LCD monitor. There is nothing you can do to resolve it, other than to replace the monitor. If it still under warranty, have it replaced.

Try going to your monitor & reset everything & try degaussing it with those controls.
