If they let the Republicans completely gut the bill on the premise that spending leading to jobs and improvements in infrastructure are "pork", there will be no recovery.∠°)

The fair comparison will be the unemployment rate in March 2009 to the unemployment rate in June 2010. Realistically, we are going to have several more months of increasing unemployment as even the earliest spending under any bill will not take effect until June or July (there is a bit of time lag from initial planning until implementation whether the purchaser is the government or a business). If we are not back to a wash on unemployment numbers by June 2010, it will be fair to complain about the stimulus bill being inadequate.

Many economists are saying much of the stimulus bill will not be felt for six months to a year. This gives the right ample time to whine about obama "not doing anything". Of course, when the economy does turn around, the republicans will be sure to demean obama's efforts and claim it was their efforts alone that provided the stimulus.
