Why can't I select certain characters from my character map?
In 'Webdings' there are some great characters like dogs, stars and apples etc but when I select them and try to copy and paste them they disappear or turn into something completely different. Sometimes a post note appears and states that 'these are for private use only' . How can I use the characters?

Yes that's exactly right, empty boxes!
I'd love to know how to set my programmes to recognise them.
I can use some i.e. ☺☼♥♫♀ but some of the others are really great!

The software you are using does not recognise them. Another indication of this would be an empty box.
