Can you explain why my beef stew was too sweet?

Last night I made beef stew and used 1 can of tomato soup as I always do. When we sat down to eat the stew it was SUPER sweet, like I had liberally seasoned it with sugar.

Very strange and not at all pleasant! I looked at the can of Campbell's soup and it has sugar in it but I've never had this happen before and I cook with tomato soup all the time.

Any thoughts?

P.S. I did not add salt to the soup (and mistake it for sugar)

Update:

Haha! No, they were upstairs playing the whole time I was preparing the stew.

im thinking that maybe when they canned the tomato soup, it could have been at peak season for tomatoes making them super sweet all on their own, maybe that's why? or maybe the kids put some sugar in it when you weren't looking? my kids do that to me, my 14 yr. old thinks that everything is better with hot sauce, i have to watch all my pots! best of luck

There are several ingredients that might add sweetness to a stew. You might have added a very sweet onion in place of a regular one (my local market often mixes sweet onions for the standard yellow. If you add Carrots, they can also be very sweet. If you didn't add a sweet vegetable, and you don't think someone played a trick on you, the only other thing I can think of is the tomato soup has changed with the addition of more sweetener. They do seem to add corn syrup to everything these days.

Maybe Campbell's has added more sugar to their soup or you unknowingly got an unsweetened variety in the past.

Did you put vegetables in the soup.

Vegetables like carrots and corn (especially if canned) contain a lot of natural sugars,

so maybe thats why it was too sweet.

I use tomato sauce for mine and one time it had a weird sweet taste. I figured it must've just been an odd batch of sauce because it only happened that one time--thank God.
