Is it EVER normal for blood sugar to spike over 200?
I am hypoglycemic. I don't often eat a lot of sugary food, but I ate something really sugary and naughty today. I know, not good. Well, I started not feeling so good, so I checked my blood sugar. It was 184. I checked it a bit later and it was 213. I have never seen numbers like that, though I usually check it when I think I might be having a problem. Can it ever be normal for blood sugar to go that high? It's about 2 hours later and now my blood sugar is 130. It's normally 80-100ish.

Yes. Sugary food will "spike" your blood sugar, in some case up to 300-400.
You blood sugar level varies, from minute to minute, based on when, what, and how much you've eaten. if you eat ice cream and cake and wash it down with a vanilla milkshake, your blood sugar WILL spike to 300-400 after about a 1/2 hour or so.
Because of the spike, your should NEVER take a blood sugar reading any sooner the TWO HOURS after you've eaten. As in your case, these "too early" readings just cause confusion.
What is important is the 2-hour reading, which is almost normal. After two hours is it expected to be higher than normal, but not grossly so. At 130, yours is fine.
What this shows is that your body is functioning normally! Your blood sugar WILL "spike" after a meal, but return to close to normal after about 2 hours.
So, lesson learned: NEVER take a blood sugar reading any sooner than two hours after eating!

If you aren't diabetic, your sugar should be below 110 mg/dL 2 hours after eating, but it will go up when you eat. ANYONE who indulges in a whole chocolate cake will have a high blood sugar, until his or her body sequesters the sugar out of the bloodstream, that's just how it works. A diagnostic test called the glucose tolerance test requires the patient to drink a very sweet liquid with a known concentration of sugar in it, and the have blood sugar checked at 2 hours to see if it is <110 again (some doctors check it at 1 and 3 hours, besides 2 hours). It sounds like you are running just about right, nearing normal within 2 hours. Has anyone ever done a work-up to see why you're hypoglycemic?

Everybody's blood sugar is high half an hour after eating. To be at 5.7 one hour after eating shows you have a perfectly healthy pancreas. It is normal to test one to two hours after eating. Anything earlier is a meaningless result.

I don't think it is. I would go to your doctor. Ask for a blood test and test for diabetes! Good Luck...over 200 is high so I would get the test!

Sometime's it can go a little out of wack, but not 113 out of wack. Are you suffering any other symptoms?
Tired?
Cranky?
Drinking lots?
Excessive urinating?
Losing weight?
If you are, I'd go see your GP.
