What is or would be the original rear-end in a 1979 Chevy C10?
I have a 1979 Chevy C10, and based on the VIN it orginally had an Inline 6 Engine.
I don't know what other info would help but I am trying to find out what type of rear-end it has on it?

8.5" 10 bolt (or maybe a 12 bolt) count the cover bolts to see, but i'm leaning towards 8.5"
If it's posi it will probbly be that sorry gov loc unit as well
Being a 6cyl it probbly has lower gear ratio. They tend to put lower gears like a 3.42, 3.73, 4.10 in with the 6cyl engines to help the small engine to pull

It could ne a 10 or 12 bolt. 79 / 80 was about the time 10 bolts started showing up. 3:08's and 3:42's are common gears.

As mentioned either 10 or 12 bolt, since it is a bit older I would guess 12 bolt. A couple of good 73-87 Chevy truck resources are:

it is probably a 10 bolt count the numbers on the differential cover that will tell you what rear it it if it has 10 its a 10 bolt if its 12 is a 12 bolt but most likly its a 10 bolt pretty standerd rears for these trucks
