I think that in 3 years you can easily get fit enough to run 1.5 miles, even 3, 10 or 50 miles (OK, 50 miles will take a little work but you get the idea). Don't worry about the run.

If you started now and decided to run for half an hour, once a week that should be enough so that in 3 years you can do the run in the time. If you can't run for a full 30 minutes then you can start by run-walking where you run until you need to stop and then walk until you can run again. Each time you go out you can run further or walk less until you can run the full 30 minutes nearly non stop. That will give you some stamina to run and I think once a week should see you able to run the full distance in a couple of months.

Next you want to worry about the speed, maybe once a week - so you are doing 2 runs (though you can swap the long run for another exercise such as cycling, football or swimming for half an hour at least), you might want to work on speed. The best way I can think of might be Fartlec training where you jog for a bit then run fast for a bit and then jog again and repeat - perhaps jog to 1 lamp post, sprint to the next and then jog to the next and so on. That will speed your legs up and doing both - some long distance and some speed work in 3 years you will easily be fast enough.

If you just want to be able to run the distance and no more then make the long run 15 minutes and then do another session where you start off by running 1 lap in the speed you need. Next session try to do 1 1/4 lap in the right speed and so on building it up until you run all the way at the speed you need.

Perhaps 6 months before you join you might want to top up your training with some extra running sessions just to make sure you give yourself the best chance.

1.5 miles is about 2400m, or 6 laps of a 400m track. Running 1.5 miles in 11 1/2 minutes is about 7.5 minute miles or 8mph. Each lap should take 1:55.

1.5 miles is around is around 6 or 7 laps. But believe me when you get around to doing it you'll do it well under 11 minutes, believe me. You have more than enough time to train and at the moment you're psyching your self out. Just start going for gentle jog's at the moment for about 10 to 15 minutes to start with. You should be able to hold a light conversation while jogging. If you can then you know that you'll going at the right pace. Lot's of people will give you different piece's of advise so try and filter everything that you'll being told. The Irish Army should be able to give you some sort of training program. But believe me, when it's time to do it for real, if you've done the training, you've nothing to worry about. The 1st time I did it I did it in 9.20 and I hadn't even trained. I got it down to 8.05 after I had put in the miles and speed training.....Good luck and don't defeat yourself mentally before you've even done it.

Well i'm on my moms account and im 12, I run the mile at 6:11. 6 minutes 11 seconds. I don't know dude, you really have to run like a mile everyday to get in good enough shape for the army.

I ran the mile when I was 13 years old at 5.54minutes but this was a record. So I think an average runner can do it around 7 to 8 minutes. Depending on your condition.

-You can for sure get in shape you have 3 years if you constantly kept running through out those years you should be able to run fast and probably be able to drop about 3minutes im guessing.

    - you are running each lap at about a little less then 2minutes.

Running is all a mental game. You just can't let yourself slow down. Keep a steady pace, DONT STOP TO WALK, and breathe regularly.

Also don't swing your arms wildly.

You should be running 20 laps at a MINIMUM, an hour.

just do a little each day.. start out really slow.. in 3 years i think you could do a marathon if you put your heart into it!

approx .14 miles in one minute...
