DO I need to amend my return and file head of household instead of single? Will I get more money back?
I already filed my return for state and federal and they were both accepted. I didn't get my money back yet, but I filed single and I had a baby in 2008. Someone recently told me I should be claiming head of household. Will that get me more money back? I only made 6000.00 dollars last year on paper. Do I amend my return and change my filing status?

I would recommend going to taxact.com and putting in all your information, it doesn't cost anything to see what it would look like, it only costs if you submit your taxes to the government. That way you can try several different ways to see which would give you the better refund. Then if you decide to go a different route with your taxes, you just wait for the refund and amend your returns

If the baby lived with you the entire time from when it was born to the end of the year and you paid over half the cost of keeping up the household, then you should have filed as head of household. You are not required to amend you filing status, but you might receive additional money if you do.
If the baby lived somewhere else, such as with its other parent, or you made half or less of the cost of keeping up the household, then you were prohibited from filing as head of household and are prohibited from amending to that status.

You can file an amended return after you receive your current refund (in other words, wait until your current return is completely processed). If you file as HOH, Head of Household, vs. Single you'll receive a potentially larger refund. You definitely want to file in the way that (legally) offers you the best tax advantage.
To get the amended tax return form, 1040X, go to http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040x.pdf . You'll need to print it out complete and then mail it to the IRS. You can file an amended return for an additional refund up to 3 years after originally filing the regular tax return.

At that low of income, there is no difference between "Single" and "Head of Household".
Remember, when taking tax advice from "someone", that "someone" is normally wrong over 90% of the time.

yes, but you have to wait until you've gotten your refund first to amend
