Life in general began in water. It took a considerable number of evolutionary advances before life adapted to land.
We don't know what brought blue-green algae ("archaebacteria") into existence; much of the evidence has been obscured or destroyed by time. We can be pretty sure that it came about by the same processes operating today: natural ones.
