NEXT time don't allow the dog inside when he's been skunked!

Tomato juice by the quart on the dog and rub it in good and leave it on a while before you rinse it off and bathe him. Follow this with toweling him dry and spray him with Fabreze... they even make a version for pets now.

Fabric shampoo for the couch if it's fabrid (you left information out) and Fabreeze. -!-

Find a product called Skunk Off - it is the only surefire thing that will take the smell out permanently.

If it is not available near you, you can wash the dog in the peroxide/dish detergent/baking soda mixture for now, and order some online. Keep in mind the smell will linger if you don't.

Skunk Off was developed in a science lab, and is absolute magic - neutralizes the musk on contact. I keep a small bottle on hand for each dog I have, after having four of them take a fairly direct hit all at once - that was special! You can also spray it safely on upholstery.

Tomato juice DOES NOT work. (trust me, been there done that)

There are several products like this on the market that do.

Just do a web search for skunk smell eliminator, and you will find quite a few "skunk off" type products.

Don't feel bad, my Lab brought me a LIVE skunk once. Made for a memorable drive home.

ok- i'm going to give it to you straight- from the experience of an ACO and the MANY times i've proven this works (i live in the boonies.... skunks are fun chasin'!)

forget the tomato juice, forget the vinegar.

go to the grocery store. buy a 4- pack of DOUCHE. yep, douche. get the scented kind, too. it's embarrassing, but i just tell everyone in line that it's for getting rid of skunk on a dog. then i get more laughs than weird looks.

take the douche and the dog, put them in the bathtub.

squirt the douche first on where the dog's most affected, then on everywhere else. SOAK HIM GOOD.

rub it in for about 5 minutes. it helps to have a little heat on in the bathroom, if it's a bit warm in there, the douche will penetrate.

without rinsing, soap the dog heavily with some people shampoo. (i KNOW it's bad for dog's skin- but it's got stronger perfumes, better to get rid of any remaining scent picked up by the douche.)

rinse with warm water first, then a little cooler.

your dog will smell as good as new.

Source(s): experience.... lots and lots of late nights opening tomato juice cans and then getting a dog that smelled like skunked V8... yuck.

Give dog a bath in tomato juice! lots of it! tomato juice neutralizes the skunk smell of the dog.

Source(s): Had to give a dog a bath once and tomato juice was the only thing that got rid of the smell.

    the couch?

    not gonna happen.

    the dog?

about forty baths in tomato juice or paste.

dont water it down scrub it in and let it sit for ten mins.

it helps, but not a total cure.

or you could go up to pet smart or what ever and look for their deskunking products.

but in my experience, nothing totally removes the smell except time.

the products and tomato juice will take the smell down to tolerable but not remove it entirely.
