Talk to people on xbox live from computer?

I was wondering if there was a free way to talk to people on Xbox Live from my computer. I have heard of people doing it before, but I can't seem to find any information on it.

Update:

My question was asking if I could talk to people on Xbox Live via computer, not if I could play computer games on the Xbox.

Update 2:

Yes, you can use your MSN account, but the question is "How?"

    No they are either playing the computer version...or using Xbox Connect, which is only compatible with older xbox
