What is the meaning of-Benefits of the doubt ?
I always heard this to some people,I assume that they doubt the person's credibility But when I heard a man said this to his sweet , friendly dog ,I got
confused on what he meant..

"I'll give you the benefit of the doubt" means something like "I can't prove you're wrong (or lying), but I suspect that you are, so because of this doubt I'll accept what you say."
Usually it's not used in an accusing tone.

he's know your guilty but theres a slight doubt in his mind which he is going with, thats giving you the benefit of his doubt and he's letting you go! two guys wearing the same coloured clothes one throws a stone at someone, later they see one of the guys he says it was the other guy, they decide to give him the benefit of the doubt, they cant be sure it was him as they both looked a like! if juries cant come to a decision 2 out of the 12 jurors cant make their minds up as to the guilt of some one, then the court will give you the benefit of the doubt and set you free!

I never heard this expression used when addressing a dog. The expression is usually used ( as you noted) when one has doubts about someone's assertion. Basically you are telling the person: I am not totally convinced ,but I am willing to put suspicion aside.
