I need help becoming artistically inspired!/Favorite art class assignment?
I like to call myself an artist. But It's been about 2 years since I made anything good, and I rarely even try anymore. I need some inspiration or possibly some creative art class assignments used in high school/college. I'm mostly good at portraits but I'm willing to try anything to get the passion back. I really need some help. Please!!

Chilly, PLEASE don't give up on your GOD given talent. What works for me is to look around at everything, seeing the patterns and depth of colors, and evenlight sources and the direction they come from.I know that staring at a blank canvas or paper is not very inspiring so i ecourage you to pick a subject photo,a person,a scene or even yourself and sketch it out on at least an 11x13 piece of paper and slowly add detail in the background. Shading adds so much value to drawings,as well as drama.Ask yourself what you really like to draw, find pictures of that subject and go from there. If that doesn't get you inspired again,Try sculpture, it gives you a more three-d approach to your creativity.I hope this will help you in your artistic journey.PEACE

from drawing - assignment 6 - abstraction -- there were 3 options, each involving altering sketches from model life-drawing sessions -- the first, you overlay the original drawing with a grid - on a new piece of paper, draw the same number of sections, but warp the grid, space the lines differently, and draw from each box of the original into the new, oddly shaped sections -- the second, overlay two drawings with grids, and copy them onto the same new paper, and embellish or erase parts to bring them together into a new form -- the third, rip or cut the drawing, and piece it together again to create something different, then draw from it --- i didn't like the sound of these at first, but it turned out to be an interesting exercise... --- assignment 7 had several choices as well, including arranging 4 rectangles of texture, one with line, one with line that develops tone, one with tone, and one with positive negative reversal - another choice was combining images from separate sources into one
from form and structure - project 2 - relief-assemblage - create something within a grid of 36 2x2x2 inch spaces using only found or created objects... some people used old collected trinkets, created origami, collected flowers and leaves... create and arrange keeping in mind your use of colour, height, size, shape... there was something else, sorry i'm going from memory... here's what i made for it though: http://purplecow1057.deviantart.com/art/Form-Struc...
from time-based media... it's hard to say assignments, because there were only a couple and they were really open... a group audio/video project, and an open final project... people did performance, installation, video, electronics...
this semester
in colour we'll be doing op art (research, it's fun) synaesthesia, a piece to convey music through colour and design choices - split self portrait, half achromatic, half in non-local, expressive colour, using grid technique...
experimental production: photography, we did an assignment in a photobooth, double exposed a roll of film to see what would overlay...
current site &intervention: sculpture & installation project is to disassemble, cut, stack, whatever, use shoes to create a sculpture to be displayed on the side of the road
i'm writing a novel here, i know
what i actually find most inspiring of all is being exposed to new work -- visit galleries, search for events, find out if art schools nearby have exhibits, open lectures, guest speakers -- i wish i could think of nice websites but i rarely find things that way anymore --- well i guess http://www.notcot.org/ introduces me to quite a few interesting things, though it may be an indirect way to the type of inspiration you might be looking for... but you never know!

look around and find your favorite object. study the object and be aware of patterns, lines, textures, basic shapes that emerge. take what you noticed and arrange those elements on your paper, canvas, or whatever in an asthetically pleasing way. the final product of your efforts should look nothing like the object, but an abstract design.
