Am I liable for my adult children on auto policy?

I am shopping around for auto insurance and I was told by one insurer

that because my 18 and 19 year old kids are students, I am liable if they have any accidents even though the kids have their cars titled in their names and have their own auto insurance policies. She told me that this is true until they are 23. Is this true? It doesn't make any sense to me.

Update:

We live in Florida.

Progressive did the same thing to me too. As long as they are students, yes you can be liable. I had to tell them that my son no longer lived in the home. That was the only reason they would take him off my policy.

Just because they are 18 doesn't relieve us. As long as they are in school they are still considered 'minors' and still be part of the auto policy. Sucks. I know.

It only makes sense if they are still living at home. Insurance companies always base premiums on how many licensed drivers are in a household. You might want to shop around for different insurance policies. I would definitely have at the very least $1 million in liability.

Call another ins company and see what they say. I was told if my son lived somewhere else, my ins would cover him but if he lived with me and wasnt on my policy as an additional driver hed not be covered without me paying those additional monies on it. Im in another state. It could be that difference, you should also call thier perspective policy carriers and see what coverage their policies cover. Id make sure, a neighbors 19 year old totalled out the car and there was no coverage.

Not exactly - you aren't "automatically" liable, but yes, I've seen parents held responsible for damages that kids in their late 20's have done, in their car.

If your kids are living under your roof, or legally your dependents, you very well could be held responsible, depending on the circumstances.

You really need to contact the State of Florida and find out what are your liability requirements. Then contact your insurance company and tell them you are considering switching company's

The only way i could see this to be true is if you are still claiming them on your taxes, etc. Check with some other insurance company's to see what they say about it.

It depends if they are financially dependent on you.

Insurance companies only charge for adult kids if they live with your or if you are financially responsible for them as students.
