Do you ever read the phone book?

My Dad used to read phone books when the new ones came, or when he was travelling to a new place. Said you can learn a lot from the ethncity of the last names, like the area's diversity and history; he also liked seeing who the biggest advertisers were in the yellow pages, said it also said much about the sociological makeup of the area.

I do this too. It is quite interesting to see in metropolitan areas if there are more pages of attorneys or doctors, and in places like Vegas you can actually see call girls ads. In our area, its mostly farming related, and insurance and car dealers have the largest ads.

Does anyone else ever do this?

Actually I have read some of the phone book. Couldn't make it through it all though. I got bored. LOL Your dad sounds like a smart man and alot of what he says is right. You can learn alot about a town or area by reading the phone book. You can learn what is the most important to the community by reading the yellow pages.

Yes, I look at how many people has the same family name as mine,

look for really foreign sounding family names and wonder where they

come from and how do they say their family names (some have no

vowels in between so many consonants), look at the advertisements

(are abortion clinics listed in the yellow pages? just wondering if they have the guts to do), look if my ex-husband

has a new number or if he has an unlisted number, etc. There is something else I discovered in my phonebook --- it has discount coupons for some services (like plumbing) in the yellow pages.

that is so weird, but since you are interested in that. maybe you can pursue a career that pertains to looking people up, or tracking people down in metropolitan areas.

I guess you could work for traffic control, police department, or any other navigational-type job that deals with the whereabouts of people.

Source(s): pretty kewl, 'cause most people don't have the stamina to read through the whole thing.
