I live in Central Missouri (God's Country in my opinion :) anyway my house faces North also and I again like you have a porch that only gets the afternoon sun, each year I hang Boston ferns off the front and wave petunias on the side. I live down a country road and not to blow my own horn but I'm told constantly that my ferns are talked about all over town! I know that they do extremely well every year. I'vee tried them other places but mine prefer my front porch, getting only indirect afternoon sun. The real trick is to repot them in a much bigger pot after you purchase them. You can look at the best of answers to check if you want but I'vee answered another question similar to yours about ferns. Once you repot them, water them with egg water, use the water you boil eggs in or just put water in a pitcher, put the shells only in and let soak for several hrs or even overnight. Don't know what it does to them but trust me - the town will be talking about your ferns also!

Are you asking about house plants or seasonal plants you want to use outside?
